ICEBERG

"The iceberg's on the starboard bow, won't you dance with me?" - Harry Chapin, Dance Band on the Titanic

 The best part of a trip like this is often the unexpected. Today, we sailed between an ice sheet and a number of bergie bits (tiny iceberg pieces) off the port side, and a good-sized iceberg on the starboard. Fortunately, we hit none of them, but had a good chance to admire them. The ice sheet was too far away to get any photos, but we got a nice look at the iceberg:

ISAFJORDUR, ICELAND: FISH AND SMILES

Bolungarvik “ The inhabitants have always been considered hard working, fiercely independent and a bit quirky (like most of the people of Westfjords to be honest).” – from the Port of Isafjordur brochure, discussing the town of Bolungarvik. This seems to be endemic among the people of the Westfjords peninsula of Iceland, where we have made our first stop in this island nation with a population numbering only 334,000. Some 2,700 of those people live in the town of Isafjordur where we docked, and another 882 in the town of Bolungarvik just up the road and through a tunnel. One could say that we are engaging in short-attention-span travel, and I am engaging in short-attention-span writing. The vast bulk of this cruise will be in Europe.  We will set out from New York, sail (and visit) up the New England and Canadian coasts, over to Greenland and Iceland, around the British Isles, through the Baltics, around continental Europe including the Iberian peninsula, through the Azores, across the Atlantic to Bermuda, then back to New York.
